Robin Hood Multi Academy Trust is an innovative trust in Birmingham and seeks two non-executive directors with an HR/legal or property background. Board meetings are held in Hall Green, Birmingham.
About the trust
Robin Hood Multi Academy Trust was formed in 2016 with the express aim of improving educational outcomes through collaboration and innovation. The trust is based in Birmingham and operates predominantly in areas of high deprivation and need. Together, the like-minded schools create an inspiring learning experience for all children – regardless of which school they attend.
The trust currently consists of two schools - one three form entry primary and one three form entry junior school with two primary schools in the process of applying to join the trust.
Plans for the Future
The key challenges for the board over the next 12-24 months are:
- To ensure that as the trust grows it maintains the ethos and culture in which it was founded. This is being done through a rigorous vetting process of interested schools.
- Growing to an operational size where further services can be centralised resulting in sustainable growth.
- As the trust grows ensuring that educational aims and outcomes are maximised across all academies.
In the next two years the trust aspires to grow to six primary schools within the Midlands area. In order to do this, the trust has identified the skill sets required to successfully carry out its plans for the future.

Roles 1-2 – Trustee/Non-Executive Director
Trustees – or non-executive directors - are both charity trustees and company directors of the academy trust; the role is to hold to account the executive and senior leadership team. The board of trustees manages the business of the academy trust and may exercise all the powers of the trust. The trustees ensure compliance with the trust’s charitable objects and with company and charity law.

- Growth Management/ Real Estate/Property: The trust welcomes applicants a strong knowledge and understanding of building, premises and Health and Safety to sit on the full Executive Board and attend Premises/H&S committee meetings.
- HR/Legal: The trust seeks someone with a strong knowledge and understanding of HR and/or Legal to sit on the full Executive Board and attend Finance and HR committee meetings.
Both successful candidates may be called upon to play an active role in the due diligence process.
6 hours /month minimum.

Background on academy trusts
Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 71% of secondary schools and 26% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.
Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts (MATs). There are currently 980 multi academy trusts of 2+ schools. If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.
