Non-executive Director - Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust
Could you help lead the NHS in London and West Essex?
This is an opportunity to use your professional skills and/or business acumen to the benefit of our 750,000 local population.
The Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust is one of the largest acute district general hospitals in the country employing around 6,500 staff, offering services from Queen’s Hospital in Romford, the King George Hospital in Goodmayes and a number of community settings. The local population is predicted to increase by 10% in the next decade and includes some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people. The Trust has a number of challenges, which have required it to improve financial performance and a fundamental programme of change to improve quality and effectiveness across all of its activities has been embarked upon and is already delivering real results.
The Trust is one of five in England to have partnered with the US based Virginia Mason Institute and is approaching its transformation programme by concentrating on safety, value and learning underpinned with a culture of quality improvement with the patient at the heart.
There is now a vacancy for a talented Non-Executive Director to join this ambitious Board. The Trust recently exited “special measures” and so this is a very exciting time to join the organisation as it continues its journey of transformation. As a member of the Board you will:
- Work with fellow directors to set the Trust’s strategic aims, ensuring these are delivered through holding executive directors to account and that public and stakeholder confidence in the organisation is enhanced;
- Provide independent judgement and advice, working with colleagues to provide inspiring leadership within a framework of effective controls which enables risks to be assessed and managed whilst incorporating the highest standards of probity;
- Act as an ambassador for the Trust, upholding the Trust’s values, engaging with stakeholders including the local community, patients and their families and ensuring that the Board is aware of their views;
- Bring an independent perspective based on your experience to the work of the Board and its sub-committees.
For this position the Trust requires an individual, with significant board level experience gained in a complex organisation with a background including complex change and transformation. With outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to quickly add value, you may already have experience as a Non Executive Director, Trustee or Governor and ideally have links with east London and/or Essex. Whilst applications from candidates living in the Trust’s local catchment area are encouraged, we are also open to those living in the neighbouring counties. The time commitment is likely to be around 3 days a month.
