Chair of Council - Durham University

This is an exciting time to be involved with the University. Our recently adopted University Strategy 2017-2027, as set out by our Vice-Chancellor, Professor Stuart Corbridge, charts a bold vision for the next 10 years that will build on our reputation for excellence and sets out our aims to be world-leading in research and engagement, education and the wider student experience.

Following the successful completion of the final term of office of Robert Gillespie after over 10 years on the Council, we are seeking to recruit another inspirational Chair of Council who will play a pivotal role in helping us to deliver our ambitious University Strategy. The role has overall responsibility for the leadership and effectiveness of the University Council and Trustee Board enabling each member to contribute their skills to benefit the University. As Chair, you will offer strategic insight, critical friend advice/appropriate challenge and support to the Vice-Chancellor and Executive Team, promoting the University’s regional, national and international profile whilst ensuring it remains expertly managed and prudently financed. You will provide appropriate/necessary visibility within the University and more broadly externally in an ambassadorial role, leveraging your network of contacts.

Our new Chair of Council will be able to demonstrate effective leadership at Board level with strong chairing skill and non-executive director experience; and the ability to contribute and influence effectively across a complex governance and stakeholder landscape.  A commitment to equality and diversity and the creation of an inclusive environment and a genuine interest and empathy towards the current challenges facing the Higher Education sector and the specific mission and values of Durham University and its wider role both nationally and within the North East, will be required.

The deadline for applications is midday on Friday 2nd March 2018. 

Warren Partners will conduct preliminary interviews with longlisted candidates in March 2018. The Selection Panel will subsequently convene to decide upon the field of shortlisted candidates. These individuals will be invited to meet with senior stakeholders at the University to discuss the appointment further in mid/late April 2018.
